Dr Alexandra Campbell
The University of New South Wales
Research Field: Marine Ecology
Dr Campbell’s research is focused on how changing environments may influence dynamics between seaweed hosts and their natural enemies, including pathogens. A primary goal of her research is to combine rigorous ecological methods with molecular microbiology and natural products chemistry to more fully understand the ecological impacts of environmentally-mediated disease in rapidly changing oceans.
Alexandra feels that, because most research is publicly funded, scientists should be able to explain and justify their work to non-specialists whenever requested to do so. In light of this she has been involved in many forms of communication throughout her scientific career from presenter at the Aquarium to radio host to Science columnist in The Beast magazine. More recently she has been involved in educational events with Randwick Council and a presentation to the Royal Zoological Society. Her current research involves community volunteer groups and has been featured in newspaper and radio media.
