Selection Criteria

The 2019 CSL Florey Medal will be awarded to an Australian biomedical researcher for significant lifetime achievements in biomedical science and/or human health advancement for research conducted primarily in Australia.

Eligibility

  • Nominees should have completed a significant portion of their nominated research achievements in Australia.
  • Nominations will be accepted for an individual, and for up to three (3) named persons for joint nominations. Full research teams are not eligible.
  • Self-nominations are not eligible.
  • Nominees must be either permanent residents or citizens of Australia.
  • While the selection criteria focus on research achievements in line with the selection criteria, nominations from those working in industry or government sectors and demonstrating an equally high level of achievement are encouraged.

Conditions of Award

The CSL Florey Medal may be awarded to an individual, or jointly to up to three persons who would share the $50,000 prize money. There are no conditions attached to utilisation of the prize money. The Awardee(s) will be expected to:

  • Attend the presentation ceremony in November 2019 in Canberra including a lunchtime media briefing and an evening dinner;
  • Make themselves available for media interviews during the week of the ceremony.
  • Plan to be in Australia during a significant portion of the next year and participate in at least three science/biomedical promotion events associated with the CSL Florey Medal and AIPS.

Nomination Requirements

A nomination should include:

1.      A completed nomination form, including:

  • Nominee’s details
  • Nominator’s details
  • Names/contact details of up to three (3) additional supporters
  • A description of the nominee’s achievement(s) and their significance that could be understood by the general public (maximum 200 words)
  • A nominator’s statement which addresses why the nominee’s work represents significant achievements in biomedical science and human health advancement. This could include the special significance of the nominee’s contribution as compared to other work in this field of endeavour and/or significance when compared to the contributions of scientists in other biomedical science fields [maximum two (2) pages].

2.      The Nominee’s curriculum vitae

  • A CV of up to three (3) pages with one (1) additional page outlining key publications. This may be in Word or PDF format and should be submitted as an attachment. (Please note: additional pages will not be considered by the Selection Committee)

3.      Please note:

  • Entries with insufficient documentation will not be considered.
  • Submitted material will not be returned.
  • Any entries received after the closing date will not be considered.
  • Personal information provided in connection with the CSL Florey Medal will be used solely by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science and its partners (including CSL Limited and Science in Public) and only in connection with the Medal.

How to complete this form:

  1. Open the Nomination pdf Form and Download the pdf to your computer  ( use the Download or Save As option on your browser or via the Print Form and Print to PDF option on the form)
  2. Open the pdf on your computer in Adobe.
  3. Fill in all relevant details on your computer
  4. Save As  – remembering to include your surname in the file name
  5. Submit Form.

Selection Process

  • Nominations will be judged by a selection committee.
  • The Chair of the selection committee will be appointed by AIPS and will have voting rights.
  • The Chair, in consultation with AIPS, will appoint a selection committee of at least four other members, including representatives of the Australian biomedical research community.
  • The selection committee will be guided by the selection criteria.
  • Written or verbal confidential comments may be sought from nominees’ stipulated additional supporters.
  • The selection committee will reach its decision solely on the material submitted and any comments of nominated supporters sought.
  • All nomination information and material remain the property of the Australian Institute of Policy and Science and will remain strictly confidential.
  • The deliberations of the selection committee are strictly confidential.
  • The decisions of the selection committee in the selection of the Medal recipient are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • Composition of the selection committee will only be made public at the Award ceremony in November 2019.
