Prizes
A number of Young Tall Poppies are selected in each state and territory, and from amongst them a Young Tall Poppy of the Year. There is no cap on the number of winners – you should refer to past years for a guide. The results of selection are based on a nationally consistent benchmark for award.
All Young Tall Poppies receive a certificate and a trophy alongisde public/peer recognition at an awards ceremony.
In the following states and territories there is currently a prize and/or medal for the person selected as the Young Tall Poppy of the Year:
- Australian Capital Territory - the Australian National University Medal for the ACT Young Tall Poppy of the Year
- New South Wales – The University of New South Wales medal for the NSW Young Tall Poppy of the Year and a cash prize equalling a total value of $5,000
- Northern Territory – A cash prize of $1,500 for the NT Young Tall Poppy of the Year supported jointly by the NT Government, Charles Darwin University and the Menzies School of Health Research
- Queensland – A cash prize of $10,000 for the QLD Young Tall Poppy of the Year jointly supported by Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Queensland (the recipient must use the money in support of their research or outreach work, and provide a summary statement of how the money was used and the benefit achieved by end February 2013)
- South Australia – A cash prize of $5,000 proudly support by the SA Government for the 2011 SA Young Tall Poppy of the Year which will be awarded separately and is for the winner’s research activities
- Tasmanian – A cash prize of $5,000 proudly supported by the Tasmanian Government for the Young Tall Poppy of the Year in Tasmania – for use towards the winner’s research activities.
- Victoria – A cash prize of $5,000 for the Victorian Young Tall Poppy of the Year, curently supported by the University of Melbourne.
- Western Australia – A cash prize of $5,000 currently supported by CSIRO, Curtin University and the University of Western Australia for the WA Young Tall Poppy of the Year.
