Sea of Rubbish

23/08/2011

A sea of plastic rubbish in the Pacific, twice the size of France, is already an ecological disaster. It is affecting threatening Australian marine life – the Flesh-footed Shearwater on Lord Howe Island offer an example. And humans are responsible.

276 pieces of plastic found in just one young bird – a potential world record no one could be proud of.

Environmentalist Tim Silverwood and Dr Jennifer Lavers, a Zoologist at the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery and Honorary Research Fellow, University of Tasmania, who is was honoured as Tasmanian Young Tall Poppy Scientist of the Year for 2011 tell the story.
