Tall Poppy Science Award Winners Visit Ballarat High School
Ballarat secondary school students experienced a morning of scientific discovery when three Young Tall Poppy Award winning scientists from Melbourne visited Ballarat High School on Friday 22nd October 2010. The scientists talked to 250 year 9 students about their fields of research and careers in science.
Dr Chris Tonkin, The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (2010 Victorian Tall Poppy of the Year) talked about his research on Parasitology and Malaria Biology, Dr Natalie Hannan, The University of Melbourne (2020 Tall Poppy) shared her research in Reproductive Biology and Dr Angus Johnston, The University of Melbourne (2010 Tall Poppy) talked about his research in the field of Nanotechnology.
The presentations were interesting and thought-provoking and the students were not only able to gain an insight into the work of a scientist, but were also able to hear about the latest research in these important fields of study. The event was a great opportunity for all involved, and the Tall Poppy Campaign is looking forward to further rural visits in the new year.
