
NSW/ACT Young Tall Poppy Science Awards 2009
The prestigious 2009 NSW/ACT Young Tall Poppy Science Awards were celebrated with over 150 guests from across the research, industry, education, community and government sectors at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on 29 October 2009.
Sixteen NSW and two ACT young scientists' achievements and leadership in both research excellence and communication to engage the community were announced. Read more about the winners
On the night, the inaugural UNSW Medal for the Young Tall Poppy of the Year was jointly awarded to the most outstanding of the 2009 NSW winners:
Dr Michael Valenzuela, The University of New South Wales (Regenerative Neuroscience)
Dr Kira Westaway, Macquarie University (Geochronology and Quarternary Science)
The awards were presented by the Honourable Jodi McKay MP, NSW Minister for Science and Medical Research, alongside Dr Cathy Belov, 2008 NSW Young Tall Poppy and this year's Eureka People's Choice awardee.
AIPS congratulates all the nominators and awardees and appreciates the efforts and achievements of all those who nominated in 2009.
We also thank our Tall Poppy Campaign supporters in NSW - Industry and Investment NSW's Office of Science and Medical Research (principal supporters) and the NSW Department of Education and Training, alongside Macquarie University, the University of NSW and the University of Sydney.
We are indebted to all members of the NSW/ACT selection committee, chaired by Professor Peter Schofield, Executive Director and CEO, Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, including our ACT representative, Professor Robin Stanton, Pro-Vice Chancellor ANU.
