
CSL Florey Medal 2009 Nomination Guidelines
Selection Criteria
The CSL Florey Medal will be awarded to an Australian biomedical researcher for significant achievements in biomedical science and human health advancement for research conducted primarily in Australia.
Nominations for the 2009 CSL Florey Medal closed at midnight 29 June 2009.
Nominations for the 2011 Florey Medal will open in around March 2011.
Eligibility

Nominees should have completed a significant portion of research achievements in Australia.

Nominations will be accepted for an individual, and for up to three (3) persons for joint nominations.

Self-nominations are not eligible.

Nominees must be either permanent residents or citizens of Australia.

Nominations from those working in industry or government sectors and demonstrating an equally high level of achievement are encouraged.
Conditions of Award
The CSL Florey Medal may be awarded to an individual, or jointly to up to three persons who would share the $25,000 prize money. There are no conditions attached to utilisation of the prize money. However, the Awardee(s) will be expected to:

Attend the presentation ceremony on Monday 9 November in Sydney.

Make themselves available for media briefings (at least two interviews).

Plan to be in Australia during a significant portion of the next year.

Participate in at least three science/biomedical promotion events associated with the CSL Florey Medal over 2010 in negotiation with AIPS.

Description of the nominee’s achievement(s) and their significance that that could be understood by the general public (maximum 200 words)

Nominator's statement which addresses why the nominee's work represents significant achievements in biomedical science and human health advancement (maximum two pages)
2. The Nominee’s curriculum vitae of up to three (3) pages with one (1) additional page outlining key publications.

These may be in Word or PDF format and should be submitted as an attachment.

Any additional pages will not be considered by, or provided to the Selection Committee.
Please note:
- Entries with insufficient documentation will not be considered.
- Submitted material will not be returned.
- Any entries received after the closing date will not be considered.
- Personal information provided in connection with the Young Tall Poppy Science Awards will be used solely by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science and CSL Limited and only in connection with the Medal.
Submission of Nominations
Nominations should be emailed to cslflorey(at)aips.net au or posted to the addresses below by midnight AEST Monday 29 June 2009.
For hard copy nominations, three copies of each nomination form and attachments should be enclosed and printed single-sided and securely fastened (but not stapled or bound), and sent to:

Selection Process

Nominations will be judged by a selection committee.

The Chair of the selection committee will be appointed by AIPS and will have voting rights.

The Chair, in consultation with AIPS, will appoint a selection committee of at least five other members, including representatives of the Australian biomedical research community and one nominee of CSL Limited.

The selection committee will be guided by the selection criteria.

Written or verbal confidential comments may be sought from nominees’ stipulated additional supporters.

The selection committee will reach its decision solely on the material submitted and any comments of nominated supporters sought.

All nomination information and material remains the property of the Australian Institute of Policy and Science, will be used solely in relation to the CSL Florey Medal, and will remain strictly confidential.

The deliberations of the selection committee are strictly confidential.

The decisions of the selection committee in the selection of the Medal recipient are final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Composition of the selection committee will only be made public at the Award ceremony on 9 November 2009.
