Chair - Professor Rick McLean, MD FRACP

Rick McLean is a senior consultant physician based in regional Victoria. After completing training as a consultant physician in nuclear medicine in 1985 he worked in hospital and private practice until he commenced as Associate Dean of the School of Rural Health of the University of Sydney in Dubbo, NSW in 2001. Later he was appointed Principal Medical Advisor in Medical Education and Workforce with the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing in Canberra from 2006 to 2008. Rick has also held various roles in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians from 1990, including as Chief Censor and as President of the Adult Medicine Division from 2004-2007, as well as serving on committees involved with rural health, workforce and e-health. For relaxation he flies a Piper Twin Comanche and plays golf badly.

Leon Beswick

Leon is Managing Director of Ogilvy PR Health in Sydney. He has ten years experience implementing successful health communication campaigns for major pharmaceutical and biotech companies, as well as professional associations and health technology organisations. Leon has also worked as a policy adviser in the office of then Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Dr Michael Wooldridge and as a health policy adviser with then Victorian Premier, the Hon Jeff Kennett.

Andrew Goodsall, BA (Hons) Grad Dip (Asian studies) MBA

Andrew Goodsall is the Head of Healthcare Research with UBS Australia. Andrew's team has rated the number one healthcare equities research team in each of the major surveys since 2003. Andrew commenced as an analyst in 1999 after an extensive government and health background in which he was senior adviser to the health minister in the Kennett Government in Victoria. Andrew holds MBA, BA (Hons) and Grad Dip (Asian Studies) qualifications.

Maria Kavallaris, BAppSc PhD

Associate Professor Maria Kavallaris is a nationally and internationally recognised cancer researcher. She is Head of the Pharmacoproteomics Program at the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia for Medical Research (CCIA), NHMRC Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor (conjoint) University of New South Wales. Maria has made significant contributions to identifying and understanding the mechanisms of action and resistance to anticancer drugs. Her achievements have been recognised by numerous international and national awards including a Brigid Leventhal Women in Cancer Research Award, Young Tall Poppy Award and an Australian Museum Eureka Prize. Maria actively contributes to her discipline on committees and grant review panels and was President of the Australian Society for Medical Research. She is a strong advocate for scientific research and promoting science education.

Professor Ross McKinnon, BPharm BSc(Hons) PhD

Ross McKinnon is the Director of the Sansom Institute at the University of South Australia. The Sansom Institute conducts health research across a broad range of disciplines including molecular medicine, pharmaceutical science, nutrition science, pharmacy practice and population health. He also holds a position as Principal Scientist for PharmaQuest, a drug development company he co-founded in 2002 to advance skin cancer chemopreventative strategies. Ross was a recipient of a Young Tall Poppy Science Award in 2000.

Peter McMahon, BA

Peter recently moved to EDS, where he is involved in sales in the field of eHealth, from a previous role as a Sales Manager with Telstra Enterprise and Government, managing a customer base comprising mainly of Federal Government Departments and Agencies. Peter has previously worked as a policy adviser to various Federal Ministers, including Michael Wooldridge, Kay Patterson and Joe Hockey. Peter has a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a double major in politics. He is married to Nicole Cameron and they have two wonderful daughters, Paris and Imogen.

Julie Owens, MP MBA BA

Julie was elected to the House of Representatives for Parramatta, New South Wales in 2004 and re-elected to the government in 2007. Before running for Parliament, Julie was head of the Association of Australian Independent Record Labels, a national association representing the interests of small business in the music sector. Julie has a strong small business background with expertise in performance, operations, management, Government and policy development.

Robyn Parker, MLC

The Hon Robyn Parker MLC is the NSW Opposition Parliamentary Secretary for Education & Aboriginal Affairs and Chair of the General Purpose Standing Committee No.2 in the NSW Parliament. Robyn entered the NSW Legislative Council ‘class of 2003’ with a credo inspired by her children of ‘keeping it real.’ She is a former TAFE teacher and has extensive experience in child-care and the family services sector. Robyn was instrumental in setting up and pioneering groundbreaking childcare programs in both Victoria and NSW and initiated a number of rural outreach programs in these areas – many of which still operate to this day. Robyn also has a strong understanding of the needs of small business having operated several small businesses herself and managed several medical services. Robyn lives in the Hunter Region with her husband David and family.

Professor Peter Rathjen B.Sc. (Hons) (Adel) D.Phil. (Oxon)

Peter is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Melbourne. Prior to this position he was Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne from 2006 - 2008. Professor Rathjen represents the University on a number of Boards including the Florey Neuroscience Institutes (FNI), the Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC), the Victorian Institute for Chemical Sciences Limited (VICS) and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). Peter is also Patron of the Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria (STAV) and is a former AIPS Young Tall Poppy, having served AIPS as both South Australian and Victorian Tall Poppy Campaign Ambassador.

Robert Wells, BA

Robert is Director of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy and the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute at the Australian National University, Canberra. He works on a range of health policy and systems issues, including primary care, private health insurance, rural health and health workforce. Robert came to the ANU in 2004 from the Australian Department of Health and Ageing where he had many years experience as a senior administrator across many areas of health policy and program management. He was involved in the establishment and subsequent operations of the Australian Council on Safety and Quality in Health Care and the National Institute of Clinical Studies. He was formerly the secretary to the National Health and Medical Research Council. He serves on a number of boards and has a BA degree from the University of New England.

Elektra Spathopoulos, BSc(Econ) Hons MFIA PSM- Executive Director & Company Secretary

Prior to joining AIPS in late 2008, Elektra was Fundraising and Communications Director at Austcare from 2003, an Australian humanitarian aid organisation. From 1997 Elektra worked with the Department of Immigration in various management roles and received a Public Service Medal in 2000. She was also a consultant for non-government organisations in community development and Jewish-Arab co-existence in Israel, and a Research Officer for NSW Health. She has her BSc(Econ) Hons from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Elektra is a Trustee of the Refugee Council of Australia Foundation. She has two teenage sons, and enjoys trying gardening and sailing. Elektra is invited to attend Board meetings as both ED and Company Secretary.
